We posted recently about a week-long crackdown that was being undertaken by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol that focused on distracted drivers. Specifically, law enforcement officials were looking for motorists who were talking on their cell phones without using a hands-free device as required by law, as this activity has long been associated with San Diego car accidents. The crackdown has now been completed, and the police have announced the results of their efforts.
The authorities have announced that during that week-long crackdown, 467 area motorists were cited for using a cell phone without a hands-free device while driving. More than 500 others were observed breaking this law, but they were not cited because police had more pressing concerns at those times. The fine for a first-time offense is $159 and repeat offenders face a $279 fine. The law enforcement community was hoping that this effort would increase awareness and reduce the number of San Diego car accidents.

We would like to join the law enforcement community in our hope that this effort will bring awareness to this ongoing problem and ultimately reduce the number of San Diego car accidents that occur because a driver is distracted. One look at the overall statistics regarding California car accidents should alert anyone to the potential scope of the problem. Every year, more than 175,000 people are injured and nearly 3,000 people are killed in these crashes.
