More and more people are looking to alternatives for transportation these days so they can avoid heavy freeway traffic. One of those emerging options is the use of private planes. This mode of travel offers convenience and speed, but it’s also a way of moving around that can be extremely dangerous. Tragically, that point was reinforced recently when a fatal San Diego plane crash involving a private aircraft killed one person and critically injured four others.
This crash occurred last Monday afternoon on the ninth hole of Admiral Baker Golf Course in Grantville, located at 2400 Admiral Baker Rd. According to witnesses, a small plane was seen and heard flying at a very low altitude before crashing on the 11th hole of the north course. Apparently, the pilot in the plane had contacted the tower at Montgomery Field in Kearny Mesa soon after taking off at 12:45 p.m. to alert them to an open door and that the plane would attempt to return to the airport. At that point, radio contact was lost and the crash occurred soon thereafter. The result of the crash left one woman dead and four others critically injured.
California Plane Crash Statistics
First and foremost, we’d like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the woman who was killed and to those who were injured in hopes that they are able to recover from their injuries. Even though most understand that air travel is generally safer than driving, the statistics regarding California plane crashes should serve as notice that no mode of travel is absolutely safe. In 2010 alone so far, there have been 97 California plane crashes of all types, leading to 32 crashes that caused fatalities.
