Most people understand that when they are driving and children are present that they need to use extreme caution. Children do not necessarily understand the nuances of moving traffic and therefore can be unpredictable in their movements and decisions. While it’s too early to know completely what led to a tragic accident on Friday afternoon, what is known is that a 7-year-old girl was killed by a pickup truck with an ice cream truck in the area.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune:
“A young girl who was near an ice cream truck with other children died after being struck by a vehicle shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday in the Emerald Hills area of San Diego.
The 7-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, was struck on Iona Drive, near Market Street.
According to police, the girl stepped off the sidewalk on the east side of the street and was struck by a pickup headed north on Iona Drive, driven by a man who had three children inside with him. The driver, who stopped, was not under the influence or speeding and did not appear to have broken the law, said Sgt. Art Doherty. He was released without citation.
Doherty said police could not find adult witnesses and are hoping to speak with the driver of the ice cream truck. The pickup that struck the girl had driven around the truck, which was parked on the east side of the street.”
